Collection of Ideas explores libraries as places where knowledge, memory, and human creativity are preserved across generations.
This original hand-carved woodcut depicts the historic Malatestiana Library in Cesena, Italy, one of the oldest surviving public libraries in Europe and a remarkable example of late medieval architecture. Built as a place for learning and contemplation, the library represents the enduring human desire to collect, protect, and share ideas.
Through the strong contrasts of black and white woodcut, the artwork focuses on the rhythm of architecture, the repetition of bookshelves, and the quiet atmosphere of a space dedicated to knowledge. The carved lines transform the interior into both a physical place and a symbolic landscape — a reflection on the power of books to connect people across time and cultures.
The work is part of my ongoing Library series, inspired by historic libraries around the world as well as my own experience of the small local library in my village. These spaces remind me that access to knowledge does not depend on size; even a small library can open doors to countless worlds.
Created using traditional woodcut printmaking, the artwork is carved by hand into a wooden block and printed individually using professional relief printing ink.
The woodcut technique is especially suited to architectural subjects, where carved lines can emphasise structure, perspective, and the character of a space. Each hand-printed impression contains subtle variations, making every artwork unique.
