My story
Artist Biography
Marjan Dijkstra is a Norwegian printmaker whose work explores the interplay between landscape, biology, and the body’s internal rhythms. Rooted in the fjord region of Stordal, her practice draws from everyday observations, ecological gardening, and natural light conditions that shape human physiology and emotional states. She works primarily with woodcut, linocut, and mezzotint, using traditional techniques to investigate how hormones like melatonin, oxytocin, and growth hormone are influenced by our surroundings. Through layering techniques, she creates rich colors that mirror natural light, emphasizing the micro-macro contrast of nature.
Her work explores elemental questions of physiology, local knowledge, and the connection between the human body and its environment. Recent series include Circadian Rhythm, which responds to seasonal light changes and hormone cycles in rural Norway, and The Library Project, an exploration of collective memory, tactile knowledge, and public space. Both series merge scientific insight with material sensitivity, activating the senses through color, texture, and rhythm.
She studied at Ytre Kunstfagskole and has exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (UK), Ørsta Kunsthus, and in group shows across Norway. Her practice is supported by grants from Møre og Romsdal County and Fjord Municipality.
