Ovary — Circadian Rhythm Series

Original Mezzotint Print

Ovary is an original mezzotint print from my ongoing Circadian Rhythm series, exploring the hidden connections between light, hormones, and the biological rhythms that shape the human body.

The ovary represents one of the body’s many internal timing systems. Hormonal processes involved in reproduction, metabolism, and wellbeing are influenced by complex interactions between the endocrine system and our internal biological clock. Through this work, the ovary becomes both an anatomical structure and a symbol of cyclical change, renewal, and transformation.

Together with the eye and neurons in this series, the ovary forms part of a larger exploration of how the body receives information, communicates through neural and hormonal pathways, and adapts to repeating rhythms.

Handprinted in deep red, the image combines anatomical observation with poetic abstraction. The colour reflects vitality, energy, and the invisible hormonal processes that sustain life.

Created using the traditional mezzotint intaglio technique, this artwork explores the movement between darkness and light through rich velvety blacks and subtle tonal transitions. Each impression is individually handprinted, signed, and numbered, making every print unique within the limited edition.

Circadian rhythms are one example of the many biological cycles that regulate life. This series explores the relationship between external rhythms of light and the internal rhythms of the human body, including neural and hormonal processes.

Created using the traditional mezzotint intaglio technique, the print combines rich velvety blacks with delicate tonal transitions. The slow and meticulous process of preparing the plate and building the image through light and shadow creates a unique depth that is characteristic of mezzotint.

Each impression is individually handprinted, signed, and numbered, making every artwork a unique piece within the limited edition.
