Original mezzotint from the Secret Garden series
Planting a Seed explores the relationship between botanical forms, human anatomy, and the hidden patterns shared across living systems.
Inspired by the seed of the nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) growing abundantly in my permaculture garden, this mezzotint reflects on its unexpected visual resemblance to the folded structures of the human brain. A small observation in the garden became a starting point for exploring the connections between plant life, the body, and the processes of growth.
The title refers not only to the physical act of planting a seed, but also to the beginning of an idea — how curiosity, observation, and knowledge can take root and develop over time. Like a seed, a thought can grow into something more complex and meaningful.
Through this work, a familiar garden plant becomes a reflection on the shared language of organic forms. The print invites viewers to look closer at the structures around them and discover relationships between the natural world and ourselves.
The Mezzotint Process
Created using the traditional mezzotint technique, Planting a Seed is developed through a slow and meticulous intaglio process. The copper plate is first prepared with a textured surface, creating the foundation of deep darkness from which the image is gradually revealed.
By carefully smoothing and refining areas of the plate, light and detail emerge from the shadows. This process creates the characteristic velvety blacks and subtle tonal transitions that make mezzotint uniquely suited to intimate studies of natural forms.
Each print is individually hand printed using professional Charbonnel ink on 350 gsm Hahnemühle fine art paper. Small variations between impressions are part of the handmade process and make every print unique within the limited edition.
