Original woodcut from the Library series
Crossroads explores the meeting point between past and present, knowledge and discovery, and the many paths through which ideas travel.
This original hand-carved woodcut depicts the ancient Library of Celsus in Ephesus, one of the most iconic monuments of Greek and Roman architecture. Once a place where thousands of texts were preserved, the library represents humanity’s ongoing search for knowledge and understanding.
The work was inspired by my own photographs taken during a visit to Ephesus, where the remains of the library still carry traces of the people, ideas, and cultures that passed through it. The title Crossroad reflects both the physical location of ancient civilizations meeting and the symbolic crossroads where history, memory, and human curiosity intersect.
Through the traditional woodcut technique, the architectural structure is reduced to strong contrasts of light and shadow. The carved lines emphasize the rhythm of columns, stone, and space, transforming the historic building into a visual reflection on the movement of ideas across time.
Created using traditional woodcut printmaking, the image is carved by hand into a wooden block and printed individually on a professional printing press.
The bold black ink highlights the relationship between carved marks and empty space, allowing the material qualities of the woodcut process to become part of the expression. Because every print is hand printed, each impression contains subtle variations that make it unique.
