Melatonin
Melatonin explores the relationship between natural light, the Norwegian landscape, and the biological rhythms that shape our daily lives.
The image is inspired by the winter sunrise viewed from my home, where the first light appears above the mountain ridge to the east. In the Nordic landscape, daylight changes dramatically throughout the seasons, influencing not only the character of the environment but also the body's internal clock. This connection between landscape and physiology forms the foundation of the Circadian Rhythm series.
Melatonin is the hormone that helps regulate our sleep–wake cycle. Although it is produced during darkness, healthy melatonin production depends on exposure to daylight—particularly the natural light of the morning. The rising sun in this print therefore represents both the beginning of a new day and the biological signals that prepare the body for restorative sleep later that night.
Rather than illustrating science directly, Melatonin combines landscape and biology to explore how the places we live quietly influence our health, wellbeing, and perception of time.
The Printmaking Process
This artwork is created using a traditional two-plate colour woodcut technique. Two carved woodblocks are printed in succession, allowing layers of colour to build depth, atmosphere, and subtle tonal variation.
The natural grain of the wood remains visible throughout the print, adding texture and reinforcing the connection between the material, the landscape, and the organic rhythms explored within the work. Every impression is individually hand printed, making each edition slightly unique.

About the Series
The Circadian Rhythm series investigates how natural light, human physiology, and the surrounding landscape are interconnected. Inspired by my background in anatomy and physiology and by daily life in the Norwegian fjord landscape, the works combine scientific concepts with traditional printmaking to explore the invisible rhythms that regulate sleep, hormones, and wellbeing.
