Growth Hormone explores the relationship between sleep, biological renewal, and the natural cycles that sustain both the human body and the living landscape.
The central motif is a pink poppy growing in my garden. While the poppy has long been associated with sleep, here it becomes a symbol of restoration and regeneration. During deep sleep, growth hormone plays a vital role in repairing tissues, supporting growth, and maintaining the body's natural rhythms. By pairing the flower with the molecular structure of the hormone, the artwork creates a dialogue between botanical life and human physiology.
Floating above the bloom, the growth hormone molecule emerges as part of the composition, suggesting the invisible processes that take place while we rest. The contrast between the vibrant flower and the deep green background reflects the balance between stillness and vitality, while the layered colours reinforce the relationship between natural light, biological rhythms, and the cycles of growth found in both people and plants.
Growth Hormone is created using a traditional three-plate colour woodcut technique. Each colour is printed separately from its own carved woodblock, gradually building the final image through multiple passes on the press.
The natural grain of the wood remains visible throughout the print, adding texture and depth while reinforcing the connection between the subject matter and the material itself. Every print is individually hand printed, making each impression a unique original artwork.
