Coexistence captures the delicate relationship between pollinators and the plants that sustain them.
The print depicts a bumblebee resting on a cosmos flower — a small but essential moment within the larger ecosystem of the garden. Inspired by observing my daughter’s fascination with bees among the flowers, this artwork reflects on curiosity, connection, and the fragile relationships that allow natural environments to flourish.
Rather than focusing only on the beauty of the individual flower or insect, the work celebrates the interaction between them. The bee and the bloom exist together in a relationship built on exchange and dependency, reminding us that even the smallest encounters in nature are part of a much larger network of life.
The Mezzotint Process
Coexistence is created using the traditional mezzotint technique, a meticulous intaglio process valued for its deep blacks, soft transitions, and atmospheric quality.
The copper plate is first prepared with a textured surface, creating the foundation of darkness from which the image is gradually revealed. Through careful polishing and refinement, areas of light and detail emerge, allowing the subtle forms of the bee and flower to develop with remarkable depth.
Each print is individually hand printed using professional Charbonnel ink on Hahnemühle fine art paper. The handmade process creates small variations between impressions, making every print unique within the limited edition.
